Biometric hand geometry readers

Release date: 01 August 2006

Biometric hand geometry readers from Ingersoll Rand have bee installed at the Port of Felixstowe as Phase 1 of a project which will require all truck drivers to biometrically identify themselves.

By combining smart cards with biometric identification, security levels will be increased without affecting cargo handling times. Linked to a centralised internet-based Haulier Identity system, the movement of goods will be tracked and efficiency improved.

Hand geometry was chosen for its ability to cope with the harsh weather conditions at the port and becasue it was both easy to use and widely accepted by the truck drivers over other biometric systems.
